Meet Heather Byrne, the creative behind the nuMONDAY shop Designer Poems.

“I write poems and draw animal characters that I make into cards and I like playing around with rhymes and puns”

Can you introduce yourself and what is it you do?

I think I’m a lucky person, I’m married with three adult children and a cute cat.

I’m a positive person and I’m always surprised when others are not.

I write poems and draw animal characters that I make into cards and I like playing around with rhymes and puns.

Have you always been creative?

I’ve always written poetry but I think I’ve got more creative as I’ve got older.

What is it working with the materials that you particularly enjoy?

I love the look and feel of a clean page in my notebook, always working in pencil.

Creating images on an iPad is great fun and you can correct mistakes easily!

Can you tell us what inspires your items?

Making people happy.

It’s that simple!

“It can take a while to get the right feeling, especially for a commission and I’ve often woken in the middle of the night with an idea for a rhyme or solution to a line.”

How do you make your items?

For poems I make numerous notes and scribbles.

It can take a while to get the right feeling, especially for a commission and I’ve often woken in the middle of the night with an idea for a rhyme or solution to a line.

For the cards each character is created on my iPad and re-worked until I’m happy.

Many of my characters look unsophisticated – that’s deliberate!

Mostly the idea and words comes first and the drawing second.

Tell us a bit about your studio or where it is you work from?

I can work anywhere!

All I need is a pencil, my notebook, computer and iPad.

Mostly I work from home, in the garden if I can.

What does craft mean to you?

Uniqueness, hand-made, creativity and passion

Who inspires you as a creative entrepreneur?

My husband.

“Even though my poems are usually fun, it’s the truly personal aspect that makes people emotional.”

What is your proudest achievement so far?

It sounds weird, but making a person cry when they read a poem I’ve written.

Even though my poems are usually fun, it’s the truly personal aspect that makes people emotional.

Often you can write words that are hard for others to say out loud.
