Meet Jane Astley, the creative behind the nuMONDAY shop No Ordinary Emporium.

“I knew from a young age that I was happiest when drawing or making something.”

Can you introduce yourself and what you do?

I’m a Web and Graphic Designer based in the North West and along with my partner we run the online shop No Ordinary Emporium.

Our main products are the unique personalised travel maps and traveller’s journals.

Product: Personalised Notebook £44-£57

Have you always been creative?

Always.

I knew from a young age that I was happiest when drawing or making something.

I loved painting, making clothes, making little houses, drawing and animating art on my older brother’s computer – all sorts!

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I first studied Graphic Design and then went onto study Photography.

But really found my feet in Web Design which I self-taught to promote my work online.

“I’ve been using computers for design for over 20 years so feel quite at home.”

What is it working with the materials that you particularly enjoy?

My creative medium at the moment is the computer and it’s the endless possibilities that creative software can give you.

I’ve been using computers for design for over 20 years so feel quite at home.

Can you tell us what inspires your creations?

I made our first personalised map as an anniversary gift.

My partner was so happy with it we thought other people might also like to give them as gifts and there it began!

Product: Travel Map £42-£60

How do you make your pieces? What techniques do you use?

All of our designs are made to order using creative software and then we have them printed professionally.

What does craft mean to you?

Putting your creativity, thoughts, ideas into something that other people will (hopefully) love – how good is that!

Who is your inspiration?

With out shop No Ordinary Emporium, our main inspiration is travelling and the special memories it gives you.

Our products have been really popular with honeymooners, anniversaries and for 30th and 40th birthdays.

What is your proudest achievement so far?

We recently reached over 100 sales.

Whilst this may not sound massive to other retailers out there, from the first idea we initially had, we had no idea whether it would be a success.
